Artistic Installations

Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Linkedin Email this link

We have received many suggestions around the issue of public art on our open space, and in particular whether the Council would consider artistic installations on Highcliffe Beach. This topic can be somewhat divisive as what one person considers 'art' may not be considered so by someone else, and tastes vary depending on which cultural era the viewer prefers.

We intend to utilise this page to ascertain your opinions around the ideas we have put forward, and as new suggestions are made we will publish them on here in order to gain feedback. Any popular ideas will be given further consideration by the Council and if possible, a feasibility study and business case will be prepared to potentially apply for external grant funding for future projects.

Please view the photo gallery to look at different examples of public art at coastal locations, and answer the Quick Poll below so we can ascertain your initial thoughts on this idea.

Please also feel free to ask any questions about this project in the Your Questions section below, we will endeavour to answer them as soon as we can and your input will help shape the future content of this project page.

Hi, I quite like the idea of Artistic Installations on the beach and I think it could be a nice meeting point for people. Also when you look at photos of peoples holidays they always have a nice iconic piece in them which reminds them of where they've been. I understand that the beach hut fiasco has scared a lot of people, so how about a temporary art festive along the beach and then take it from there? The piece of work at the top of the page is stunning who wouldn't want to go and see that!

Dan Asked over 3 years ago

Thanks for your comments Dan, and we would certainly be open to the idea of an artistic event or festival along the clifftop if we were approached to do so. We want to make the most of the open space in that area and support our community to use it for their recreational purposes, so we are listening on here and starting to put together the more popular views on this subject.

I like the idea of art but wouldn't prioritise it over other things necessary to improve and maintain the beach.

Thank you for getting involved in our discussion, it is your views and comments which are going shape the way we approach new ideas and proposals so we really appreciate the input. Please check back in with us regularly as we will be adding new project ideas as and when they come up, we will also send out a regular newsletter to let everyone who is registered to our site know if there is anything new to discuss.

I'd support the concept in another context but not as the very best use of a small fund as think there's lots else it could be used for. Agree with post below - if it was incorporated into useful things would be great.

Thank you for your comments, and there does seem to be a consensus forming which supports that viewpoint. To be clear though there is currently no additional pot of money allocated towards this potential project, all we are doing is ascertaining if our visitors would like us to develop the idea further. If it is clearly not supported then we will concentrate our efforts towards other projects which have a more widespread support.

I give my support to new Art installations on Highcliffe Beach, but just to be clear when you say 'on' Highcliffe Beach do you mean actually 'on' the beach? I support public art particularly when it is incorporated in the 'design' of other features ie walkways, seating, lighting, railings etc.

Andyrox Asked over 3 years ago

Thank you for your question, we don't currently have any fixed ideas about what installations might actually look like and we could certainly include all the types of examples that you raise. The objective of this project page at present is to just ascertain if there is support in principle for the idea before we spend any more time (and money) developing it further. It is important that we get a balanced view from our visitors before we go into any more detail, so we can make the case either for or against taking the project forward.

Why are you only considering Highcliffe beach? Why not others (such as Friars Cliff, Avon, Mudeford)?

Judy Asked over 3 years ago

Thank you for your question, and you make a very good point! The initial Coastal Community Fund award was based upon a bid for the area around Highcliffe Beach, however we really see the value of expanding the remit of this website further along the coastline and we therefore asked the Department of Communities and Local Government, who manage the fund, if they were happy with that. Thankfully they have agreed so whilst the first 3 projects on this site are Highcliffe focused, we do plan to add additional project pages later in the year which will encompass Friars Cliff, Avon Beach, Mudeford and beyond, so please watch this space! We will let everyone know about any new projects via our site newsletter.

This section of coast attracts many visitors who are drawn by its peaceful, natural beauty which contrasts with the busier resorts along the coast. Given that funding for local authorities is under pressure, why would valuable resources be allocated to 'art works' that are not natural and which can be potentially viewed as beautiful, monstrous or nondescript, depending on the eye of the beholder?

Beachhutfighter Asked over 3 years ago

Thank you for your question, and the valid point that you raise is exactly the reason why it is being debated on this website. Just to be clear though it would not be the intention of this potential project to place any additional burden on Council funding, and therefore this type of scheme could only be financed by external grants, such as Arts Council funding. It can only be considered if it comes at zero cost to the local taxpayer, and the idea will only be taken further if it proves to be popular so please take our Quick Poll and have your say.
